A welcome into the home
Arrive in Dirang Village and step from the mountain air into a room of timber floors, low tables and quiet, lived-in detail.
Come into a traditional Dirang home, settle close to the floor and discover Monpa food as a sequence of tastes, textures and generous hospitality.
Monpa hospitality is felt in the way a guest is received, warmed, fed and encouraged to stay a little longer.
The experience is deliberately intimate. The home, utensils, hearth and floor-seating room are part of the story, while the menu follows ingredients long at home in the mountains—millet, maize, buckwheat, red rice, beans, fermented soybean, chillies and local cheese.
Arrive in Dirang Village and step from the mountain air into a room of timber floors, low tables and quiet, lived-in detail.
Begin with traditional Monpa butter tea, Kakoong roasted maize, and small preparations that set the pace for the meal.
Local grains, buckwheat noodles, beans, vegetables, fermented flavours and cheese dishes arrive for the table to share.
Close with seasonal fruit, conversation and a little more time in the warmth of the home.
The mud hearth gives the kitchen its centre. Around it sit black cooking pots, metal vessels, bamboo storage and tools shaped for the work of a mountain home. Some preparations are slow, some precise, and all are connected to the way food has been made here for generations.
